Business Partnering: Fad or the Future?
A recent Sheppard Moscow conference held in London showed how Business Partnering can steer companies rapidly towards significantly more effective, even transformational, ways of operating that can be of particular assistance in recessionary conditions.
Featuring input from a number of speakers and panelists made up of Sheppard Moscow clients, Experian, Unilever, First Direct and Royal Bank of Scotland and Sheppard Moscow consultants, the event highlighted a number of key issues, including:
- A move to Business Partnering is a major change programme for the organisation, implying a different culture; a different way of working and a different mindset. It requires learning for line managers as well as for the Business Partners themselves.
- Preparation and diagnosis are of fundamental importance. A full analysis of the developmental requirements of line managers, Business Partners and the shared service centre staff, in the context of the business’s objectives, will offer the best chance of success.
- Business Partners are likely to need to boost their confidence and negotiating ability.
- Do not move to a Business Partnering model unless the principal elements required for success are in place. A failed initiative could tarnish the image of Business Partnering at the organisation for years to come.
