Leading in Uncertain Times – building capability through coaching
On the 4th November, the Sheppard Moscow Ireland office hosted a seminar in Dublin for clients. ‘Leading in Uncertain Times: Building Organisational Capability through Coaching’ was the title of this event which drew great interest from among our client network. With 40 invited guests in attendance, Sheppard Moscow’s Andrea Cusack introduced the event referring to the significant increase in interest in coaching as a means to develop leaders and move organisations forward. Our intention was to create space for dialogue and to prompt this with short inputs from three speakers, each of whom would bring a different perspective on the topic. Sheppard Moscow’s Paul Spain presented our key propositions for leadership development, and illustrated these through a typical client’s story. This was followed by a presentation by Andrew Lambert, Director of the Corporate Research Forum. Andrew presented highlights from a recent CRF report into the use of coaching, focusing on current trends and changes in how organizations are using this key business tool. The third speaker was a Sheppard Moscow client, Ira Morris – Director of Leadership and Organisational Development (Europe) for Genzyme Corporation, a leading multi-national biotechnology company. He shared his own experience of using coaching as a means to respond to that organisation’s current challenges and stay agile while growing in tough market conditions.
After a coffee break, guests selected one of five themes and broke off into smaller discussion groups, each facilitated by a Sheppard Moscow consulting team member.
The topics suggested were as follows:
- Integrating Coaching into Leadership Development
- Developing a coaching culture
- Evaluating the impact of coaching
- Linking Coaching to Talent Management
- Linking Coaching to Performance Management
In all cases, there was lively discussion for about 45 minutes.
Eamonn O’Dwyer from Sheppard Moscow then facilitated a closing round of observations, questions and comments. This was followed by lunch and a great deal more lively discussion.
Feedback on the seminar has been very positive and the Sheppard Moscow team is looking forward to running more events in the New Year.
