Come and join us for conversation and insights into what it takes to reduce risk and increase effectiveness in large complex projects. There’ll be something to eat and a glass or two to enjoy. We’ll be discussing how we meet the challenges of delivering major infrastructure, construction and engineering projects; and lessons learnt in forging alignment and developing world class capability in collaboration and leadership across organisations. Your thinking will be stimulated by hearing from our three guest speakers (details below), and Sheppard Moscow with our decade of practice in this field:

Andy Mitchell CBE
CEO, Tideway

Andy is CEO of Tideway, creating the organisation from joining in 2014 to be the infrastructure provider constructing and operating the Thames Tideway Tunnel. He is also Chair of the Infrastructure Client Group that is behind the initiative to change the way the industry goes about delivering infrastructure, intriguingly called “Project 13”.

Prior to this he was Programme Director and a board member at Crossrail, Programme Director at Thameslink following various roles in Network Rail and in creating infrastructure in Hong Kong. He is a fellow of the Institute of Civil Engineering and the Royal Academy of Engineering and holds a BSc from Imperial and an MBA from Henley Management College.

From what we’ve experienced working with him Andy approaches mega projects as much as a people and cultural challenge as a technical and commercial one. He values openness, shared value, enabling others to lead better, a focus on optimism, experimentation, giving people a chance to solve it themselves, whilst having as much fun as possible along the way.

Darren James
Managing Director Infrastructure, Costain

Darren is MD for Infrastructure and Executive Board Member at Costain Group plc. He is accountable for delivery to clients including Crossrail, HS2, Highways England, Network Rail and London Underground. He is also non-exec director of the Port of London Authority and represents the industry on the Prince’s Trust Construction and Business Services Leadership Group.

He has been with Costain over 29 years and has built his career there from being a graduate to his current role. A Chartered Engineer, he has a BEng in Civil Engineering from the University of Surrey and completed executive education programmes at Harvard, London and Wharton Business Schools.

What we know from working with Darren is that he values partnerships, transparency, being fully involved in providing solutions to problems by challenging himself and others to achieve great outcomes.  Darren has been particularly vocal in needing to address the skills challenge we all face rather than complain about it being a crisis and is a strong advocate of the up-skilling, apprenticeship creation and diversity solutions to meet these challenges. He likes people who say what they mean, do their best to do what they say they would do, developing organisations and teams and when there is a spare moment family, motorsport and rugby (Wales and Lions!).

Rob Jones
Capability Development Director, HS2 Ltd

Rob joined HS2 Ltd in October 2016 and has undertaken various roles. He is currently the Acting HR Director having previously been Capability Development Director where he was leading a portfolio of projects designed to ensure HS2 is fit for purpose. Prior to that he had been supporting the Phase 1 team with their collaboration strategy.

Before joining HS2 Ltd he was Head of Organisational Effectiveness at Crossrail for nearly 5 years he led an award-winning team accountable for culture, engagement, leadership development, talent and collaboration/alignment support to the broader programme. Previously he worked for a global retailer working across the UK, Europe, South East Asia and the US. He holds a BSc in Medical Biochemistry, a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management and a MSc in Organisational Behaviour from London’s Birkbeck College.

In our long experience of working with Rob we’ve seen that one of his key skills lies in his ability to really read complex, matrix, multi partner business environments.  He translates that knowledge about the strategy and business needs with how to get things done, enabling and developing leaders and teams to create impact. He is most passionate about improving things, red wine and (there’s a pattern here!) Welsh rugby.

There will also be ample opportunity to share your own insights and experiences with peers from other companies.

Over the course of four years Sheppard Moscow had the privilege of partnering with Crossrail on collaboration and team alignment across the programme by: facilitating client and contractor JV teams, and aligning design teams across multiple organisations in order to create cohesion.
